Prince Royce – Double Vision {Deluxe Edition} (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44.1 kHz | Time – 58:01 minutes | 671 MB | Genre: Pop
Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | @ Sony Music Latin/RCA Records

Bronx, NY-born and raised Latin superstar and award-winning artist Prince Royce will be celebrating the album release of Double Vision (RCA Records/Sony Music Latin), his first ever English language album.Double Vision features guest appearances by Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Snoop Dogg, Tyga and Kid Ink.

The new deluxe album from Prince Royce featuring hit songs “Back it Up” ft Jennifer Lopez & Pitbull, “Stuck on a Feeling” ft Snoop Dogg, “Extraordinary”, and “Handcuffs”. The deluxe includes the 12-song standard album + 4 additional new tracks!

The debut English album from Prince Royce opens with a razor-sharp electro beat, a pimpin’ Snoop Dogg appearance, and the first Anglo couplet to ever come out of the bachata superstar’s mouth: “I like you talking dirty/I like your filthy love.” Those lines come from the sexed-up highlight “Stuck on a Feeling,” while the album’s follow-up single, “Back It Up” with Jennifer Lopez, is a steamy ode to butts that belongs next to “Baby Got Back” in the Sexy Club Tracks Hall of Fame. Double Vision is decidedly in the post-R. Kelly, post-Miguel land of R&B, getting girl crazy during its title track (which should be the new strip club standard for introducing two-for-one dances) and then attacking the hips in a more a traditional style with the lustful Latin number “There for You.” Oddly enough, “Handcuffs” refers to a loyal heart rather anything found in 50 Shades of Grey, but the album is much more than just the Prince talking dirty in English. As far as crossover comparisons, this risk-taking and well-executed LP condenses Shakira’s multi-album English transition into one daring release, taking listeners all the way up to a She Wolf-type experience, where the production is razor-sharp and innovative beyond expectations. Slick guest artists Tyga and Kid Ink help the listener bridge the gap between the album’s maverick moments and the sweet songs aimed at teens, and with smooth-voiced Royce showing equal grace with love and lust, Double Vision becomes the great and infectious model for a 2015 pan-global pop album.

Sarah McLachlan – Shine On (2014) [Deluxe Edition]
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44.1kHz | Time – 46:50 minutes | 546 MB | Genre: Pop
Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | @ Verve Music ,a Division of UMG Recordings, Inc.

Three Time Grammy Winner and legendary singer songwriter makes her Verve debut with her eighth studio album, Shine On. Sarah has sold over 40 million albums in her career and is one of the most respected female artists in music today.

The new album was recorded in Vancouver with longtime collaborator/producer Pierre Marchand (the co-writer of hits like “Adia” and “Building a Mystery”), along with contributions from producer/songwriter Bob Rock (Michael Bublé, Nelly Furtado) and keyboardist Vincent Jones.

In a press release, McLachlan revealed that the album was inspired by her father’s passing and her own appreciation of life: “This album is about moving through the second half of my life in a more mindful and meaningful way, recognizing that every day, every moment is precious and though we all have our issues and problems, our damages, we all have the ability to continue to learn, grow from our experiences, thrive and shine on. Many of the songs are inspired at least partially or wholly by my father’s passing three years ago and the profound effect losing him had on me. I had to find my footing again without the anchor of his unconditional love.”

Shine On captures Sarah McLachlan at a period of transition, switching labels (she’s signed with Verve after decades at Arista) and experiencing the death of her father and divorce from her husband. Some of this turbulence can be heard underneath the surface of Shine On — explicitly so on “Song for My Father” and “Broken Heart,” whose titles give their game away — but the defining characteristic of this seventh McLachlan studio album is not despair but rather hope. Certainly, there is melancholy here — a feeling that surfaces in the slower, gentler moments, the kind of sound that is heavily associated with McLachlan’s mid-’90s hits — but there’s also a surprising, resilient buoyancy here, manifesting itself in big, ringing adult alternative pop tunes that pepper the album. Surrounding these songs — the best of which are “In Your Shoes” and “Monsters” — are those signature McLachlan swoons, the surprisingly soulful “Love Beside Me” and an effective, swinging coda called “The Sound That Love Makes” that’s built on a simple ukulele but soon expands. Shine On, as a whole, has a similar trajectory; it starts from simple, sad emotions, then builds out into an embrace of love and life.

01 – In Your Shoes
02 – Flesh And Blood

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44.1kHz | Time – 02:19:58 minutes | 1,59 GB | Genre: Pop
Official Digital Download – Source: Qobuz |  @ Barclay
Recorded: 2013-14

Known in America primarily for her film and modeling careers, Vanessa first captured attention for her impressive musical debut in 1987. Her single, “Joe le Taxi,” reached Number 1 on the charts in multiple countries when she was only 14 years old. In the years since, she has continued to earn acclaim as a singer, serving as muse to such varied songwriters and producers as Serge Gainsbourg, Lenny Kravitz and, most recently, the French electropop star Matthieu Chedid (who performs as “—M—”). Her recent studio album Divinidylle won her two major Victoires de la Musique awards (the French equivalent of Grammys): Album of the Year and Female Singer.

Best Of features Paradis’ most recognizable songs from a career that spans just over twenty years along with previously unreleased bonus tracks including “Il Y A” (There Is) and the Cole Porter classic “I Love Paris”. Another selection from the impressive track listing is “Be My Baby” — written and produced by American rock musician Lenny Kravitz on her self-titled English language album.
As she has proven time and again with her continued international success, Vanessa Paradis’ instrument is one that transcends borders and language by conveying a refreshing purity that has become so rare in a world of manufactured talent. She will no doubt continue to win fans by bringing her greatest hits stateside and performing for lucky audiences in New York and Los Angeles.

Recorded Live at the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Centre, June 3, 2013

An internationally renowned story-teller, singer-songwriter and vocalist Yasmin Levy should really need no introduction. Over the course of five remarkable albums and countless world tours, her deep spiritual singing and passionate vocal delivery have made her that rarity, a true international star. Tango is thus Levy’s sixth album and whilst her preceding one, Libertad, established her as a singer-songwriter of real repute, drawing heavily on the influences of both Spanish and Turkish music as well as featuring her trademark Ladino songs, here she introduces us to another of her great passions, with an album, and accompanying concert DVD, of sublimely arranged and passionately performed Argentinean Tango. It is a brave move, but one that shouldn’t surprise us. For Levy is an artist who refuses to stand still, from her breakthrough as a re-inventor of Ladino, via her forays into Persian and Turkish song and her own flamenco influenced originals, she is an artist always on the lookout for new challenges, new ways to express the melancholic beauty at the heart of her beguiling art.

‘Yasmin Levy has always specialised in drama and passion, at times annoyingly so, but now the Israeli singer has found the style that perfectly fits her powerful, theatrical performances and regal stage persona. Best known for her work in reviving the Ladino music and language of the Jews who were expelled from Spain and dispersed across the Mediterranean in the late 15th century, she went on to explore influences from Spain to Turkey. On this set, recorded live in Tel Aviv, she is backed by a full orchestra to rework classic tangos that almost all deal with love and pain. Her impressively powerful, emotional voice dominates the orchestra on the anguished Y Todavía Te Quiero, and she moves on to songs by the Argentinian heroes Carlos Gardel and Astor Piazzolla, whose thoughtful Vuelvo Al Sur is backed by flamenco guitar and bandoneon concertina. A triumph.’ –Robin Denselow, The Guardian

The Movie Song Album is a 1966 studio album by Tony Bennett. The album consists of songs from films, opening with the theme from The Oscar, in which Bennett had recently appeared. With this project of such high quality of song material and collaborators, he was to describe the album in his autobiography as his “all time favorite record”.

Johnny Mandel was the musical director, and he and Neal Hefti and Quincy Jones arranged and conducted their own compositions on the album. Luiz Bonfá played the guitar on his two songs, “Samba de Orfeu” and “The Gentle Rain”. The pianists Tommy Flanagan, Jimmy Rowles and Lou Levy all collaborated, each on one song.

Bennett’s recording of “The Shadow of Your Smile” won Mandel and Paul Francis Webster the Grammy Award for Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards of 1966, and Bennett performed the song at the 38th Academy Awards, where it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

By the mid-1960s, retreating from the rock & roll onslaught, that old-time staple of the pre-rock days, the big romantic ballad, had been relegated to Hollywood, where it turned up in the opening and closing credits of movies. Like other classic pop singers, Tony Bennett had sought it out there, and with this album, coincident with his first (and last) acting role in The Oscar, he devoted himself exclusively to movie themes, everything from “The Trolley Song” (Meet Me In St. Louis) to “Days Of Wine And Roses.” Some of the tunes were not first-rate, but in “The Shadow Of Your Smile” and “The Second Time Around” (previously recorded by Frank Sinatra), Bennett found material worthy of him, and even when he was faced with minor material, be sang movingly. –William Ruhlmann

Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Source: HDTracks | @ Rhino/Warner Bros.

The classic debut album from Norway’s a-ha. Includes quintessenital new wave hits “Take On Me” & “Sun Always Shines on TV” and has sold over 10 million units worldwide. Hunting High and Low peaked at number 15 on the US Billboard 200.

Anyone who dismissed a-ha as a one-hit wonder must have missed out on the band’s fine debut, Hunting High and Low. Though the band spawned many further hits across the rest of the world, “Take on Me” exploded in the States and the group never cracked the top of the charts again. It’s a shame, because the album contains a handful of songs that nearly match the manic energy and emotional crack of its big hit. Further, it’s a cohesive album with smart pace changeups, and it rarely fails to delight or satisfy a listener’s need for a synth pop fix. The opening kick is a huge one: “Take on Me” is a new wave classic laced with rushing keyboards, made emotionally resonant thanks to Morten Harket’s touching vocal delicacy. It didn’t hurt in the era of MTV that the song’s video was a hyperkinetic blend of mind-warping animation and filmed footage with a romantic thriller’s heart. Harket’s hunky physique and cheekbones also didn’t hurt the video’s chances at heavy rotation. Getting past that video, “The Sun Always Shines on T.V.” is just as thrilling. Starting as a sad ballad, it explodes into something much more, as chugging guitars and operatic synths keep pace with Harket’s evocative vocal stylings. If ever a 1980s song qualified as Wall of Sound, “The Sun Always Shines on T.V.” would be it. The remainder of the album sees a-ha switching deftly back and forth between dramatic overtures and classic new wave keyboard motifs. “Train of Thought” and “Love Is Reason” are reminiscent of early Depeche Mode or Camouflage, but Harket’s rich voice and flair make them purely a-ha. The band explores decidedly European terrain in the theatrical “Hunting High and Low” and dances a pop waltz with the sweet “Living a Boy’s Adventure Tale,” coming across like a marriage between the Blue Nile and Alphaville. Delightful song snippets “The Blue Sky” and “And You Tell Me” act as frosting on the cake or as glue between the theater and the dancefloor. One can’t escape the feeling that Hunting High and Low is a product of the 1980s, but with highs like “Take on Me” and “The Sun Always Shines on T.V.,” and no lows in sight, a-ha’s debut is a treat worth relishing.

Recorded: Phase One Studios in Toronto, Canada.

This album exultingly blends Amanda Martinez’ unique Mexican and South African roots with flamenco soul. Usually described as a Latin jazz singer, her style is more eclectic, with world music, cabaret and pop elements also coming to play.
Local music lovers are fortunate that Amanda Martinez let her heart rule her head in terms of her career. After graduating with a Masters degree in business (her earlier degree was in biology), opportunities in the world of banking presented themselves to the Toronto-born singer/songwriter. Simultaneously, her passion for Latin music remained strong, as shown when Martinez began producing and hosting a popular weekly radio show, Café Latino, on local radio station JAZZ FM, as well as performing in city clubs. “I had a decision to make,” she tells Tandem in our recent interview. “Do I go for it, or just keep playing music for my friends as a hobby?” Thankfully, she went for it, and Martinez is now reaping the rewards of that courageous step. On Oct. 20, she releases her second album, Amor, and then launches it in grand fashion with a concert in the prestigious setting of the new Koerner Hall at The Royal Conservatory of Music. That show will be something of a homecoming for Martinez.

“When I was growing up I studied classical piano, and I used to take my exams at The Conservatory. I’d always have these butterflies and a nervous feeling going into that building. It’s very cool to be performing there now. I got to see Koerner Hall while it was under construction, and it’s just beautiful,” she explained. Performing at such a venue confirms the following Martinez has built since releasing her first album, Sola, in 2006. An acclaimed and highly accomplished work, it went on to sell 7,000 copies, a very impressive figure for a jazz-accented release in Canada. It helped earn Martinez multiple nominations at the National Jazz Awards and a Best World Music Artist trophy at Toronto’s Independent Music Awards, while touring with Jesse Cook helped expand her audience beyond Toronto. With Amor, she’ll have a realistic chance at success outside Canada too, and a November performance at New York City’s famed jazz club, The Blue Note, will test the waters there.
Reflecting on the success of Sola, the singer admits she had no specific expectations. “You’d think that as a business graduate, I’d have had sales targets and a big plan,” she says. “I really just went on blind faith. I had the fire in me that I had to get this music out there. I just felt I was bringing some good energy to the universe and was hoping people would respond. In that sense, I guess it did exceed any expectation I must have had somewhere.”
As the daughter of a Mexican-born father and South African Jewish mother, she was exposed to a wide range of music and culture. “I had my first taste of the stage when I was nine-years-old and quite shy,” she says. “I got a part in a camp play and being onstage, I felt the electricity you feel from the audience. That is what I live for; it’s my favourite thing. I love the chemistry that happens in the moment between the musicians and with the audience as well. That’s something I genuinely live for.”
Assisting the chemistry in her band of ace Toronto players is the fact that Martinez is married to her bass player, Drew Birston. Also featured in her group are longtime guitarist Kevin Laliberte, and her Cuban bandmates, Rosendo Leon, Alexander Brown, and Osvaldo Rodriguez. “The Cubanos in the group have so much energy and passion for the music. It always feels like a big party when we get together. I usually cook for the rehearsals, and it is just fun!”
Her group’s prowess and versatility is showcased on Amor, a record that also demonstrates Martinez’s growth as a songwriter (the majority of the tunes are originals) and as a fluent and expressive vocalist. The album stretches beyond the confines of Latin jazz, incorporating world music, cabaret and pop elements. Outside material on Amor includes Mexican favourite “Cucurrucucu Paloma” and “Alcoba Azul,” featured in the film Frida. When it comes to choosing covers, Martinez explains “a song just has to move me. It’s as simple as that. A song that gets me and makes me feel something.”

Elvis At Stax celebrates the fortieth anniversary of these legendary recordings. Following the success of Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite, Presley returned to his hometown of Memphis and spent time at Stax Recording Studios. Elvis At Stax bristles with energy and dynamism. Included are the hits “Promised Land,” “Raised on Rock,” “I’ve Got a Thing About You Baby,” “My Boy” and much more.

The title “Elvis at Stax” is slightly misleading, suggesting Elvis Presley decided to set up shop at the famed Memphis recording studio so he could use their house band, or perhaps co-opt some of the Southern soul groove. That wasn’t the case. Elvis chose the Stax studios to conduct several recording sessions in 1973 for a simple reason: it was close to his Memphis home. He rented out the studio twice, once in July and once in December, and brought in his crack backing band, recording enough material to fill out three CDs. This music was doled out over the years, accounting for five hit singles over three years (a B-side and a posthumous single also came from these sessions), along with three albums: 1973’s Raised On Rock, 1974’s Good Times, and 1975’s Promised Land. These albums were all strong, but aren’t often considered part of Presley’s core canon, possibly because this mid-’70s run of records were often packaged like product (certainly there’s not a memorable album cover among them), possibly because, apart from “Promised Land,” there were no hit singles that could be called a true smash or part of his core canon. And that’s why Elvis at Stax is so valuable: taken as a whole, these 1973 sessions are revealed as his last great blast of creativity in the recording studio. Essentially, he was working the same ground he began to plow on his 1968 comeback, but the aftershocks of Elvis Country are apparent, along with just the slightest hint of funky, organ-driven grooves. In this context, the preponderance of alternate takes are not tedious, but rather show Elvis’ good humor and creativity as he tries out slightly different approaches on each take. What impresses is Presley’s virtuosity and how he cannily constructed his performances to seem effortless: there’s sweat fueling these tight, punchy renditions, and heart behind his ballads, and you can hear him work it all out on the alternate takes, then reach full flight on the finished masters.

One-half of the imponderably titled From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis (later issued as a separate album, Elvis in Person at the International Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada), captures Elvis from the summer of 1969, while the exhilaration of conquest was still evident. It’s a nice compromise between mere entertainment and the revelatory: The first few songs are old hits to pull you in; the second side opens with a roaring medley of “Mystery Train” and Rufus Thomas’s “Tiger Man” and leads to a staggering seven-minute “Suspicious Minds.” The studio album, ten tracks from the previous Memphis sessions, are a letdown and, even at the time of release, the two-fer concept seemed ill conceived.

After an eight-year absence from the music industry, actress and singer Hilary Duff released her fifth studio album “Breathe In. Breathe Out”, an upbeat dance album that touches on themes of self discovery, romance and failed love.

Hilary Duff took an extended breather after the release of 2007’s Dignity, sitting out music in favor for film, television, and family. She returned eight years later with Breathe In. Breathe Out., an album whose title suggests a certain measure of calm but whose music isn’t quite placid. Picking up the dancey makeover of Dignity, Duff continues to favor the glossier, melodic segments of pop — often, the album suggests nothing so much as an American spin on Natasha Bedingfield — but there are certainly moments when it’s clear she’s paying attention to recent radio: it opens with one of those moments, with “Sparks” echoing Ellie Goulding while, later on, “Rebel Hearts” thumps to a Mumford & Sons stomp. Elsewhere, there are hazy hints of EDM but the appeal of Breathe In. Breathe Out. is how Duff keeps the focus on the song, so everything, even the rhythms, is coloring on cuts of soft, clean contemporary pop. That the album is ever so slightly out of fashion is also endearing, for it suggests Duff sings this pristine dance-pop not because she thinks it will sell but because it’s what she enjoys.

Iconic vocalist Jimmy Somerville, lead singer of Bronski Beat and The Communards, pays tribute to his roots in dance music on Homage, a collection of 12 original disco tracks. While working with his friend and the record’s producer John Winfield, Somerville was inspired to turn all the songs they were writing into disco. Famous for reimagining disco classics as his own, such as You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real), Never Can Say Goodbye? and Don’t Leave Me This Way, to name but a few, Homage is a logical next step in Somerville‘s career, one at which he can only excel considering his background, passion and distinctive vocal talent.

“I’ve finally made the disco album I always wanted to and never thought could. If I was 15 again I’d buy it, sit on my bed, slowly open the gatefold, slide out the vinyl, place it on the turntable then jump off the bed and imagine someone just passed me a tambourine … I’d be in heaven! So open your ears, embrace the groove and pay homage to an all too easily derided sound … I LOVE disco!” –Jimmy Somerville

Jimmy Somerville has spent a fair amount of time singing classic disco songs, but his 2015 album Homage isn’t a collection of covers. Rather, it’s a trickier kind of tribute: a bunch of new tunes arranged to sound as if they were released at the height of disco. This concept is high-risk but if anybody can pull it off it’s Somerville and co-producer John Winfield, who make the smart move of pouring considerable energy into constructing the surface without neglecting the songs that lie at the record’s foundation. Although the songs are substantive, what impresses first on Homage is its sound. Gleaming, lush, and luxe, it is an album that invites total immersion. It rewards a close listen — it’s fun to play spot the influence but more rewarding to focus on the craft — but the best thing about Homage is that it so accurately replicates the feeling of prime disco that it winds up being a hell of a party record. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Music, official name Carole King: Music, is the third album by American singer-songwriter Carole King. The album was released in December 1971 and quickly rose to the top of the charts. It features songs such as “It’s Going to Take Some Time” (US No. 12 by The Carpenters), “Sweet Seasons,” a No. 9 hit for Carole King, and “Brother, Brother”. Carole King: Music experienced immediate success and was certified gold on December 9, 1971, days after release. It was certified platinum on July 17, 1995.

After years as one of the most prolific and successful songwriters in pop music, Carole King emerged in the ’70s with Tapestry, an album that catapulted her to the forefront of the singer/songwriter movement. While she had mined her back catalog for that album, she relied more heavily on songs written with new collaborator Toni Stern for Music. Coming out on the heels of the classic Tapestry, it’s hard not to feel like this album was a bit of a letdown. However, time has shown this album to be one of her finest. While these songs lyrically lack the simplistic beauty of Gerry Goffin-penned tunes, the melodies are very strong and Carole King adds some nice texture to her piano-based tunes with the tasteful percussion of Bobbye Hall. When King goes for grand statements, however, it doesn’t always work. Her call for peace and brotherhood works on songs like the opening track, “Brother, Brother,” but her voice is not strong enough and does not convey enough emotion to prevent uplifting tunes like “Carry Your Load” from sounding a bit hollow and preachy. But her songwriting is still in peak form, and there are many highlights including “It’s Gonna Take Some Time” (also made into a hit by the Carpenters) and “Song of Long Ago” (with backing vocals by James Taylor).

Carole King brought the fledgling singer/songwriter phenomenon to the masses with Tapestry, one of the most successful albums in pop music history. A remarkably expressive and intimate record, it’s a work of consummate craftsmanship. Always a superior pop composer, King reaches even greater heights as a performer; new songs like the hits “It’s Too Late” and “I Feel the Earth Move” rank solidly with past glories, while songs like “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” take on added resonance when delivered in her own warm, compelling voice. With its reliance on pianos and gentle drumming, Tapestry is a light and airy work on its surface, occasionally skirting the boundaries of jazz, but it’s also an intensely emotional record, the songs confessional and direct; in its time it connected with listeners like few records before it, and it remains an illuminating experience decades later.

Carole King was famous as a writer of girl-group hits in the ’60s. In 1971, she became more famous. That’s the year Tapestry became one of the biggest-selling LPs of all time. It’s easy to hear why–the music is loose, earthy, L.A. session-pop. King is casual, intimate, and tough; she covers all the emotional ground of the post-liberated woman with ease. She brings adult nuance to “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” and comes up with hits (“It’s Too Late,” “I Feel the Earth Move”) whose white-soul realism and maturity put pop hits to shame.

Archive live album from the songstress, an unmissable Tapestry-era performance recorded live at Carnagie Hall. With her album Tapestry on it’s way to selling millions upon millions of copies, Carole sounds relaxed, joyful and in total control of her audience. During this set, King performs 17 of her most well-known songs including, “I Feel The Earth Move”, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”, “It’s Too Late” and “You’ve Got A Friend” (performed with James Taylor, who joins her for her encore).

Anyone who took the gray-striped kitty on the cover of Tapestry as a totem, from your hip junior-high English teacher to Ben Folds, will recognize the import of Carnegie Hall, recorded the week “It’s Too Late” went to No. 1. Mostly solo at the piano, King brought home 10 of that already emblematic album’s tunes with a smattering of other numbers. Some of the latter are more callow than absolutely necessary, with “Carry Your Load” way too bouncy and “Snow Queen” too glib. But when she digs out “No Easy Way Down” (immortalized by Dusty Springfield on Dusty in Memphis) and “A Natural Woman,” it’s a little bit of heaven, even when her voice starts cracking. Actually, her nervousness is charming, though some of her between-song wisecracks fail to wow the very partisan crowd, much less the CD listener a quarter-century later. Guess that’s only natural for someone just coming into her own in public after a decade or so behind the curtain, and no one seems to mind much anyway. As the history books tell us, this was a pretty polite rock moment; to further prove it, James Taylor shows up for the encores. Though Tapestry remains the essential item, this one gets by on the grace of King’s heart.

Carnegie Hall Concert: June 18, 1971 is 17-song set recorded just as Tapestry was topping the charts and making Carole King a superstar. Featuring most of Tapestry and a few songs from Writer and Music this is, in a sense, Carole King unplugged (although that terminology was not yet in use). King performs the first half-dozen songs alone at the piano; bassist Charles Larkey, guitarist Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar, and a string quartet back her (in varying combinations) throughout the rest of the program. Tapestry wasn’t exactly a high-wattage affair to begin with, so these rearrangements aren’t radical, but they’re different enough from the studio versions to merit attention by serious King fans. James Taylor, then at the peak of his own popularity, joins King on vocals for a medley of some of her old Brill Building hits, “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”/”Some Kind of Wonderful”/”Up on the Roof”.

Natalie Imbruglia finds inspiration for her new album from her favourite male artists. Male, her first album since 2009, is a collection of classic and contemporary songs all performed by men including Cat Stevens, Damien Rice, Tom Petty, Pete Townsend and Zac Brown Band among others. It is produced by Billy Mann, who has also worked with Pink, John Legend, Celine Dion and Sting, among others.

Returning from an extended absence — she hasn’t made an album since 2009’s Come to Life and hasn’t seen a record released in the U.S. since 2001’s White Lilies Island, which was the sequel to her 1997 blockbuster Left of the Middle; a long time gone, in other words — Natalie Imbruglia lands upon an interesting concept for her comeback: take 12 songs written by male singer/songwriters and recast them as feminine. For Imbruglia, this means reviving the hazy focus of her global blockbuster “Torn,” a feel created with soft, strummed guitars and clear vocals, a sound that suits a middle-aged singer as comfortably as it does a young one, perhaps even a touch better. Although Male shamelessly evokes Left of the Middle — the cover itself looks like something of a sequel — Imbruglia takes pains to show that she’s listened to recent music. Not only are there covers of Daft Punk, Death Cab for Cutie, and Iron & Wine, but she grafts a Mumford & Sons folk-stomp onto the Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love,” then gently pushes Tom Petty’s “The Waiting” toward a tapped folk rhythm. Everything is so sweet and light, it’s difficult to discern whether Imbruglia’s choice of songs is meant to convey something greater than that these are a bunch of nice tunes. Certainly, the concept of Male suggests there might be a conceptual undertow to the album — Imbruglia finding the femininity in masculine writers — but Imbruglia chooses songs where sexuality is incidental; these are love songs that are easily retooled for the opposite sex. This safety in song selection and production means that Male certainly doesn’t have the bite of Tori Amos’ 2001 album Strange Little Girls, a record that wears its sexual politics proudly, but Imbruglia has never been an ambitious artist: she’s always been a sweet, pleasant crooner and Male plays to those very strengths.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 47:36 minutes | 940 MB | Genre: Pop
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Source: HDTracks | @ Idaho Records

Forget what you thought you knew about Nerina Pallot. Begin by tearing up the singer/songwriter tag that’s usually attached to her music. Or better still, burn it. Put the Ivor Novello and Brit Award-nominated piano ballads of the past to one side. Grab the joyous groove of 2011’s Bernard Butler-produced hit “Put Your Hands Up” and stamp it in to the ground. That heavenly voice? Give it some grit.

To describe Nerina’s new album as a departure from its four predecessors is too tame a way to say she’s changed. When she calls it her mid-life crisis album, she’s only half joking. When she shrugs and says it isn’t her happiest collection of songs, she isn’t kidding. Press play and you may wonder if the deep voiced songstress really is Nerina.

The Sound And The Fury is an album as tempestuous as its title suggests. It’s a bold, bluesy, Biblical storm, in turns restless, aggressive and defiant. Its atmosphere crackles with electronics, death and despair hang in the air and stacked strings stalk and soar. These are songs in which space is as vital as sound, in which textures matter as much as melodies, in which the lyrics creep up and soak in through your skin. From the crackling, menacing electro-blues of opener “This Is A Drum” to spectral, reflective, electro-classical closer “The Longest Memory”, The Sound And The Fury is as beguiling beautiful as it is disturbingly dark.
